How I Built a Stunning Marketing Video for $0 Using AI and Remotion (Introducing FTD)

How I Built a Marketing Video for Free Using Remotion & AI: The FTD Approach

As indie hackers and developers, we often face a classic dilemma: building a great product is only half the battle; marketing it requires high-end promotional videos that usually demand expensive software, professional editors, or hefty agency budgets.

What if you could build a professional marketing video completely from scratch, using zero dollars, open-source tools, and free AI tiers?

That exact experiment led to the creation of a promotional video for Llama Manager in just a couple of days. You can watch the final result on YouTube: Llama Manager Marketing Video.

In this article, I want to introduce a concept I call FTD (Free Tier Development) and walk you through how I pulled it off using standard AI chat free tiers and Remotion.

What is FTD (Free Tier Development)?

FTD (Free Tier Development) is a development philosophy born out of necessity and resourcefulness. It’s the practice of building, designing, and shipping products, content, or media by leveraging exclusively open-source tools and the free tiers of modern software and AI models.

Instead of paying for premium subscriptions right out of the gate, FTD pushes you to test the absolute limits of what free tools can achieve. It's about answering the question: With zero budget, how far can I get, and how fast?

The Tech Stack: Why Remotion Over Rust?

When brainstorming how to programmatically generate a video using AI, the choice of technology was crucial.

While lower-level or niche video-generation frameworks like Rust-based tools (e.g., fframes) exist, they present a major bottleneck in a Free Tier Development (FTD) workflow. Beyond the fact that LLMs are heavily trained on TypeScript and write it with high accuracy, free-tier AI chat environments impose strict execution limits. Their built-in sandboxes typically lack support for compiled languages like Rust and won't allow you to install custom system toolchains.

This is why I chose Remotion—a framework that lets you create videos programmatically using React and TypeScript. Remotion runs on a standard Node.js/TypeScript stack, which free-tier LLM sandboxes support out of the box along with package installations. Combining seamless sandbox compatibility with the LLM's deep understanding of TypeScript made Remotion the only practical choice to pull off a fully free, AI-driven video production.

The Workflow: Building the Video in 2 Days

The entire process took a couple of days, driven completely by free-tier AI chat interactions. Here is how it unfolded:

  1. The Naive Start: I kicked off the project with a very broad, unpolished prompt to the AI chat:

Create for me a stunning marketing video for this project [GitHub link].

  2. Hitches and Iterations: Because of this vague starting point, the AI didn't capture my exact vision on the first try. Furthermore, free-tier limitations (such as token context windows and message caps per hour) meant I had to pace my development and feed instructions iteratively.
  3. Refining the Prompt: I quickly realized that AI is only as good as its context. Once I started giving precise instructions, breaking down scenes, and specifying visual transitions, the quality skyrocketed.

Despite these minor hurdles, the results speak for themselves. You can check out the open-source repository on GitHub to see how the project is structured: 8clever/llama-manager.

Key Takeaways from FTD Video Creation

  • Prompt Engineering Matters: Starting with "make a stunning video" is fun, but a structured prompt saves hours of free-tier token limits. Define your target audience, scene lengths, and key features upfront.
  • TypeScript is an AI Superpower: Using Remotion allowed the AI to generate functional animation code without getting tripped up by syntax it didn't understand well.
  • Constraints Breed Creativity: Free-tier limits force you to be concise, highly focused, and resourceful with every prompt you send.

Final Thoughts

You don't need a thousand-dollar marketing budget or a professional video production studio to launch your project with a bang. By embracing FTD (Free Tier Development), leveraging modern web tech like Remotion, and learning how to collaborate effectively with free AI tools, you can build impressive media assets entirely for free.
